driver install problem - Windows 10, MFC-J6940DW

I have a new 6940 and the Brother driver install process fails. Tried installing via Windows and it bombs out with a "driver unavailable" message. Brother says its an O/S problem and I have no experience getting MS to help with anything in the absence of a service contract. Any ideas?
