Epson Stylus must be set on "photo" pref

I've got an Epson Stylus DX8450. The only way to print clearly, even for just text is to put it on the photo preference. Otherwise, it has bits missing in the letters, etc. I've tried replacing cartridges, head cleaning and head alignment (several times in fact). Is there a way to fix this? Thanks!
