Epson xp-8700

I have had an Epson printer for years which has never caused me problems. I have bought an xp-8700 and am trying to set it up but it comes up with an error saying ther is foreign material or a paper jam. There has been no paper in it, the ink cartridges haven’t even been installed yet, the set up doesn’t get this far. I can find nothing obvious except for this (see photo) which I’m not sure if it’s meant to be there or not. If anyone can advise me before I do damage I’d be grateful. Thanks
