Error message: Scanner Failure. Unable to scan, copy or send a fax.

When I turn on the Officejet 4500 printer, model G510g, it gives this error message: Scanner Failure. Unable to scan, copy or send a fax. Printer asks me to press OK, and then it displays, Starting Print... But I can't seem to cancel, go back (says Busy) or move the arrow keys. I am using a iMac with OS 10.9.5, and I do not have a phone line hooked up to the printer. Not under warranty any more. Any suggestions, please?
