MFC L5850DW Deactivating Home Phone Lines when Connecting the Printer's Phone Line

I recently bought a Brother MFC L5850DW printer. It replaced a Brother MFC-8710DW device.

I really like the 5850 but I noticed the following problem (and its an important one). When I connect the phone line to the phone jack of the printer, the dial tone on ALL our phones in the home (and we have several) goes dead. If I disconnect the line, dial tone returns. I never had this problem with the 8710.

Any ideas?
