Printer defaults to second tray

I have a Brother HL-L5200DW printer. It is a two tray laser. Tray 1 holds letter size paper and tray 2 is for legal size. When I am printing a document with both sizes and tray 1 runs out of paper the printer defaults to tray 2. Is there a setting to keep this from happening? I would like the printer to stop so I can refill the letter tray and save the legal paper.
