I recently purchased an HL-5450DN laser printer. It takes TN-720 and TN-750 toner cartridges, 3,000 and 8,000 pages. There's also a Brother HL-6180DW printer, that takes TN-720, TN-750 and TN-780 toner cartridges, with the TN-780 being a 12,000 page cartridge. Obviously the TN-780 is the same form factor as the others. Can I use the TN-780 in my HL-5450DN? What will happen if I do? Thanks.

It won't work in your printer. If you can get it to fit in your printer and connect, your printer will not recognise the Brother toner cartridge in your printer. I would play it safe and purchase the TN-750. As you are aware, the higher yield items are cheaper in the long run.
