Have Brother MFC 8840DN. Worked perfect until power surge/ momentary brown-out during a storm. Still works perfectly as a printer (duplex, network, etc.), but the CCD would light up and not move/ scan for fax or copy... so: perfect printer, but would not copy, fax, or scan. I replaced the mainboard. Now the CCD will scan/ move appropriately, but the unit prints solid black pages... only for copying... still perfect as a printer. I haven't tried faxing because it seems unlikely that will work and have no "receiving" fax for the testing. Any recommendations? I think I can get a scanner lamp CCD module for reasonable price. will that resolve?

CCD unit bad. Not getting any light reflected from the page! Not a hard fix. New they are around $200. Might not be cost effective unless you can find a used one.
