Color management and Epson R 800?

I am using Mac OS 10.4.11 and attempted to print a while using my safari browser and with my Epson printer utility set on black in the print settings and everything that wasn't black was blue and now my blue cartridge is near empty. I bought this printer on the recommendation of a sales person. I do not use it professionally nor am I independently wealthy to be purchasing Epson's expensive cartridges all the time. I use the printer for approximate 15% photos and the 85% for this type of thing (research, reference, newsletters ect...), I really hoped that this was going to be a good experience but with being able to print just black or grayscale it looks like I'll be heading back to HP. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Bob
