HP 4100N random misprints

I have an older HP 4100 I bought refurbed several years ago. Has gotten wacky: Random printing errors: substitutes a row of "H" rather than an underline, an e rather than a "-" - no way I can tolerate having to proof docs coming out of the printer! Any ideas - hate to scrap it, its a workhorse. I renewed pads and rollers and the print quality is excellent.
