Konica Minolta 1600W says it's out of paper?

My Konica Minolta 1600W says it's out of paper when it's not. I filled the tray as full as I could, tried again and got the same message. I then removed all but a few dozen sheets and tried again. This time it worked. It seems to be fine as long as I keep very little paper in the tray, but I have a fairly large print job I need to do, and would like to be able to load the tray to capacity so I can go do something else while it's printing. Any ideas why this might be happening?

I had a similar problem even with just a few sheets. I turned the printer off and then back on a few minutes later and everything was OK.
