MFC-J430W scanned documents open up in wrong program

i have an annoying issue and cannot find where to correct it. when i scan a document (target file is .pdf) it is opened in adobe photoshop elements rather than adobe acrobat reader dc which is selected in both the device scan settings window (target application) in the brother control center and is my default program for opening up a .pdf file.

any assistance is greatly appreciated! thanks.
