No functions without cartridge (MP520)

Hi,
I have a Pixma MP520 and recently ran out of black ink. I removed the old cartridge (don't have it anymore) and still didn't buy a replacement. Without a cartridge the printer is unable to do anything. Is there a way to get around this, so I can scan at least? (tried to press the Stop/Reset button for 5 / 10s, as suggested in other forums, without results)
