Page alignment test print on LaserJet M254dw doesn’t reflect what happens with real print jobs

When I do a page alignment test print on my HP Color LaserJet M254dw, the margins on the test page look fine, but when I print a real document, it is always way off centre. I also notice that the “adjusting the alignment” instruction page, which prints automatically with the alignment test page, is always way off centre too. Why is the alignment test page so inaccurate?
