shutting off color cartridge

I have a Kodak 3250 all in one printer. The majority of my printing load is black and white. Even though I tell it to print color as black and white it still goes through the color cartridge rather quickly. Of course when it needs replacing, it won't allow you to print. Is there a patch/fix or modification that will allow using only the B&W cartridge. This is getting expensive to always use the color cartridge. Thanks in advance
