Brother DCP8040 prints fine, scans fine, but copies are black

I can scan a document to my computer, save it as a PDF, and then print it to the DCP8040, and it looks fine.

However, if I press the "copy" button, it prints a page that is just a mess of streaky black, with not a trace of the original image anywhere.

Question 1: has anyone seen this before?

Question 2: is there a reset/reboot function that might clear this?
