Brother MCF-490CW wont print in black

I have a brother MCF-490CW printer and for some reason it won't print the black print cartridge. I put a brand new black ink cartridge in it and it still wont' print in black. It is about 2 years old and was given to me by my parents. They never used it and I was wondering if it is clogged somewhere. What ideas does anyone have to fix it and what can I do?
