canon ip4300 printer head removal

I have read on various web sites that to remove the print head on this printer you simply raise the RH grey lever and unclip the head. Now, I may be a bit thick but it seems to me raising that lever only lets you remove the print cartridges, am I doing something wrong?

The reason for wanting to get to the heads is to do a more thorough clean as I am continually plauged with intermittant block heads unless I use the printer daily.
I use Canon Ink wchich I seem to waste on the repat deep cleaning cycle.
I have had the printer for 3 years, is it at the end of its life,....sad because it's great for printing CD's direct.
Also, does anyone know of another make of general printer that will print CD's direct? I was recommended the Epson R285, but that is now obsolete.

thanks
