Failure to communicate...

Hello. I wonder if anyone here can help me. I have an Epson 425 printer and it is refusing to scan to my computer (a MacBook with OS El Capitan).

I have installed the latest Epson updates my computer has made me aware of, I have restarted both printer and computer repeatedly both before and after linking them up, but all I get is a discouraging bleep and the message "connect computer". The problem is not with the connector cable itself, as other functions perform perfectly well, e.g. printing off documents from the computer's files.

Any suggestions?
