Brother-HL-2280DW.
Test page looks fine.
Black print is fine, but anything that's meant to be gray is too faint.
I'd replaced the toner cartridge a while ago with a reliable knock-off, and the problem continued, so I just got a Brother TN420 cartridge, and still have the problem.
The drum unit has also been replaced, and shows 88% life remaining.
It also seems to me (but I've not rigorously tested) that different fonts, all set to black, print differently – some fine, some faint.
