Why Does My Ink Run Out So Fast When I Rarely Print

I have a Canon Pixma iP4300 printer. I rarely print (maybe 2 or 3 black and white pages a month), yet every 5 or 6 months my printer complains saying that it is running out of black ink. My printer is at least 4 years old, but it is in extremely good condition (looks almost new).

Well is the ink actually low? Maybe the ink is drying up or it could be that there is dry ink in the small passages inside the printhead
